Frequently Asked Questions
Call the Student Services Center (SSC) at 871-1931, or Come by the Hollis Building Room 0107, or Email us at chps_ssc@georgiasouthern.edu to make an advisement appointment.
WHERE IS THE STUDENT SERVICES CENTER (SSC) LOCATED?
We are in room 0107 of the Hollis Building. Come into the building from the ground floor on the Georgia Avenue end; we are straight down the hall on the left.
WHICH STUDENTS ARE ADVISED IN THE SSC?
All freshmen and sophomore students & all new transfer students are advised in the SSC. Contact the SSC for an appointment with any one of our professional advisors. You will need your telephone number, major and student ID handy when you contact us.
HOW DO I KNOW WHO MY ADVISOR IS?
Our SSC is unique and gives you the best of all worlds. All our advisors are trained to advise you in all of the majors in our College. You are not assigned a specific advisor so we make it very convenient for you. If you have an advisor you particularly like, you can make an appointment with that advisor. In other words, you can assign an advisor to yourself! If you are pressed for time and want to get in and out quickly, you can get an appointment with the first available advisor. You can even come to one of our "walk- in and wait" days. In all of these ways, you come first in our Center!
WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU ARE CHANGING YOUR MAJOR INTO A COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SCIENCES (CHHS) PROGRAM?
Make an appointment to meet personally with an advisor in the SSC so that we can orient you to our College and our majors.
Plan ahead! Many students wait until the end of the semester to change majors. If you change your mind later you can always change back--there are no limits on the number of times you can change your major! Students who make appointments early and are prepared for advisement will get their classes first. Don't put yourself in a bad spot by procrastinating!
WHAT IS ON-LINE ADVISEMENT AND WHO CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT?
Yes--we offer online advisement after your initial meeting with an advisor. Check our online advisement page for details.
WHAT IF YOU'RE ON PROBATION, ACADEMIC INTERVENTION, OR EXCLUSION?
Schedule an appointment to meet personally with one of our advisors to discuss your situation and see what we can do to help.
WHO ADVISES JUNIORS, SENIORS AND GRADUATE STUDENTS?
They are advised in their respective departments by faculty, except for pre-nursing majors. The SSC will advise all pre-nursing, pre-interior design, pre-Athletic Training, and pre-sport managments undergraduates until they are accepted into their respective programs.
WHEN SHOULD I GET ADVISED?
Although we send an announcement directly to your GSU P.O. Box and to your campus email address informing you when to schedule an appointment for advisement for the upcoming term, it's a good idea to mark your personal calendar with a reminder at midterm to contact us for an appointment if you haven't heard from us.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR ADVISEMENT?
1. Check the online Schedule of Classes and prepare a list of classes you'd prefer to take and a list of alternates. You should have at least two alternates for every preferred class.
2. Be familiar with your program of study. A curriculum sheet for your major is available in the SSC and online.
3. Be familiar with your University Catalog. It's filled with great information like graduation requirements, information on the Regents' exams, etc.
YOU SEND INFORMATION TO MY GSU EMAIL ACCOUNT, BUT I NEVER REMEMBER TO CHECK IT. HOW CAN I AVOID MISSING IMPORTANT MESSAGES?
You can actually have your GSU email forwarded to your personal account that you check every day. Go to WINGS, then to PERSONAL INFORMATION, then to UPDATE EMAIL ADDRESSES. You can select a preferred email address and your email will be forwarded to that address. You can also update changes in your home address at that site. It's really important to keep your PERSONAL INFORMATION up-to-date on WINGS. So make it a habit to check your PERSONAL INFORMATION and update it once a semester.
KEEP YOUR PERSONAL CONTACT INFORMATION UP TO DATE ON WINGS AND CHECK YOUR GSU P.O. BOX AND UNIVERSITY EMAIL FREQUENTLY
